Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1988 (April 1, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Richard Grey Hudson (ASN: 56587735), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Corporal Hudson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 March 1968, while serving as a Radio-Telephone Operator with Company A, 2d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. While on a sweeping operation, Corporal Hudson’s platoon was pinned down by intense fire from a nearby woodline, where a reinforced platoon of Viet Cong had concealed itself in strongly fortified positions. Finding himself with the only communications equipment operable, Corporal Hudson promptly began radioing information on the tactical situation. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Hudson crawled through the open rice paddy under heavy enemy fire to reach his platoon leader. While relaying on the platoon leader’s report on the progress of the battle, Corporal Hudson was mortally wounded by a sniper’s bullet. Corporal Hudson’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
