Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 134 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Miles Andrew Cowles, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General, Division Artillery, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the front in Italy, 3 – 16 September 1943. In the face of a furious German barrage during the touch-and-go phase of the fighting on the Salerno beachhead in Italy, Brigadier General Cowles remained in a forward position with his men. He fearlessly moved from position to position, advising the men, and by his very presence assuring them of ultimate achievement of their goal. His calm demeaner and steady assurance under the harrowing circumstances inspired the gun crews to a high peak of courage and efficiency and the warmth and strength of his personality encouraged the men to work tirelessly in an effort to emulate their commanding general’s valor. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Cowles, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
