Charles White graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1939. Captured after the fall of the Philippine Islands in 1942, he died in 1944 when the Shinyo Maru, a Japanese “Hell Ship” that was transporting him to Japan, was sunk by a U.S. Submarine that was unaware the vessel contained American Prisoners of War.

    Citation Needed – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes Pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) Charles Edward White, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 92d Coast Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts), in action against the enemy in the defense of Bataan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, in 1942. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain White, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
