The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Corps of Engineers) Edmund C. Knight (ASN: 0-1100182), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 150th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1135th Engineer Combat Group, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy 8 – 9 December 1944, in France. Major Knight, during the construction of a treadway bridge across the Saar River near Sarrelnsming, France, by his undaunted courage, determination and disregard for personal safety, so inspired his men that they were able to carry on construction despite heavy enemy artillery fire. On many occasions he personally led transportation from nearby cover to the work site and remained coordinating and directing the mission until; he was killed by shrapnel from enemy artillery. Major Knight’s splendid example of determination and courage reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
