The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Heinze C. Kahl (ASN: 31326962), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 150th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1135th Engineer Combat Group, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 7 February 1945, in Luxembourg and Germany. Private First Class Kahl, although wounded and dazed from shock, went to the aid of an Infantry Lieutenant who lay mortally wounded, exposed to enemy small arms, mortar and heavy shell fire. With complete disregard for personal safety, Private First Class Kahl administered first aid, raised the officer to his feet and carried him three-fourths of the way up a steep muddy slope. The Lieutenant regained consciousness momentarily to say he could go no further. Weak from loss of blood, Private First Class Kahl called loudly for the medical aid men, who were located at the top of the hill, to come immediately. A litter crew arrived together with a medical aid man and evacuated the officer and Private First Class Kahl. The outstanding courage and determined effort displayed by Private First Class Kahl reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
