Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 582 (October 8, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Charles E. Stuller (ASN: US-55030783), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On that date, while advancing up an enemy-held hill, Sergeant Stuller’s section was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. Sergeant Stuller, with complete disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to enemy observation and fire in order to place his men in effective positions. After setting up his 57mm recoiless rifle, he succeeded in destroying the machine gun emplacement while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Immediately reorganizing his men, Sergeant Stuller led them forward and overran the enemy position. It was during this phase of the attack that Sergeant Stuller was fatally wounded by enemy fire. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Stuller reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
