The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John D. Girolmo (ASN: RA-12107534), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 1st Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne), 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 February 1951 in the vicinity of Changmal, Korea. On the night of that date he was leading two squads to provide flank security for the remainder of the company as it moved through a mountain pass. When the company was subjected to enemy automatic weapons fire, he immediately led his men in a daring assault against the hostile positions. As a result of his aggressive and skillful leadership, several enemy automatic weapons were destroyed and the enemy was routed, thus enabling his company to move through the pass without a casualty. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Girolmo reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
