Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 244 (March 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph V. Culotta (ASN: RA-13277285), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chonago-ri, Korea, from 31 December 1950 to 1 January 1951. Corporal Culotta’s company was fighting a defensive action against a numerically superior enemy force estimated to be at least battalion strength. When the left flank of the company was threatened with being forced back by the weight of numbers, Corporal Culotta, an automatic rifleman, voluntarily moved to a position completely exposed to the intense fire, from which he could bring the full force of his fire to bear on the enemy. So intense and accurate was his fire, that he was successful in stalling the enemy attack long enough for the company to reorganize and reestablish its line int hat are. Later, when the order to withdraw was received, he voluntarily remained behind to cover by fire the withdrawal of his company. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he again moved to a position completely exposed to the terrific enemy small arms and mortar fire. From here, he placed such an intense fire on the enemy that he was credited with killing a least thirty of the enemy and completely disorganized a large force which was attempting to cut off the company. Five of the enemy worked their way up to his position but these he quickly disposed of with a few accurately placed grenades. It was almost entirely due to his selfless courage and accurate fire, that the company was able to withdraw intact to fight other successful actions later in the day. Corporal Culotta’s gallant actions and complete devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Infantry.
