Casey (ASN: 20829068), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Sicily, on 25 July 1943. After being mortally wounded, Sergeant Casey refused to take aid for himself but continued to direct his detail toward the capture of one of several enemy machine-gun emplacements. He personally killed two of the enemy in one of these emplacements and knocked the weapon out of commission. He died of his wounds a few hours later. Sergeant Casey’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
