Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 854 (December 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Charles V. Chubbuck (ASN: RA-51023669), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date Sergeant Chubbuck was with a unit which was defending its position against the determined assaults of a numerically superior enemy force. In the course of this action, friendly elements were ordered to withdraw to more tenable positions. Sergeant Chubbuck voluntarily remained in position to cover the movement of his unit. Steadily firing his weapon, he courageously exposed himself to the enemy fire and inflicted numerous casualties upon the hostile force. Although painfully wounded in this act he fearlessly continued to employ accurate and effective fire on the enemy. His valiant efforts were highly responsible for his unit being able to withdraw with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Chubbuck on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
