The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Guy E. Carr (ASN: 0-373428), United States Army, for gallantry in action while Commanding Company L, 3d Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, while temporarily attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Troina, Sicily, on 6 August 1943. During a bitter engagement with the enemy, Captain Carr deliberately exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire in an attempt to determine the location of the gun. He then led an attack on this position which was retarding our attack, and destroyed it. His outstanding devotion to duty materially aided his battalion to gain its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
