The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Robert Harold Campbell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 December 1942 and 1 January 1943, near Buna, New Guinea. On 17 December 1942, with complete disregard for his own safety, Private Campbell went into an area in advance of our front lines and rescued an officer who had been seriously wounded by an enemy sniper. On 1 January 1943, Private Campbell, accompanied by two other men, advanced over a cleared and open area which was subject to heavy enemy fire, rescued a wounded soldier who was lying only a short distance from an enemy machine gun emplacement, and returned him to a rear area. Private Campbell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
