(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles Lee Campbell (ASN: 37421389), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on the Rhine River, Germany, on 28 March 1945. Sergeant Campbell led a patrol across the Rhine River near Mannheim, and was killed while covering the withdrawal of his patrol as it returned to the west bank with valuable information. Staff Sergeant Campbell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 71st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
