(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Robert A. Campagna (ASN: 39009447), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at San Felice, Italy, on 26 October 1943. Staff Sergeant Campagna rallied fifteen soldiers from nearby units and led them across 150 yards of open battle ground in an attack against an enemy German company. Although German shells fell within ten yards of him, he continued the attack and was the first man into the enemy position. Twenty-four Germans were killed, seven were taken prisoner, and two machine guns were knocked out by his small band. Staff Sergeant Campagna’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
