The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Carmen J. Calabrese (ASN: 39000849), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska, on 25 and 30 May 1943. On 25 May 1943, his company having been reduced to less than a third of its original strength, was attacked vigorously by a large force attempting to regain Vanderland Peak. Under continuous hostile fire, Sergeant Calabrese scaled a 900-foot cliff to flank the Japanese with a Browning Automatic Rifle, forcing withdrawal of the enemy and preventing the loss of vitally important terrain. On 30 May 1943, while the company was engaged on high ground overlooking Lake Adrian, a strong enemy counterattack drove back the cold, hungry and battle-weary men. Without regard for his own safety and fully exposed to enemy fire, Sergeant Calabrese, by forceful commands and example, inspired the men not only to return to their positions but to continue their advance. At all times Sergeant Calabrese demonstrated a high type of courage and leadership. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
