The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Peter A. Cacossa (ASN: 20302176), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 10 August 1944. When his company was pinned down by heavy concentrations of fire from enemy 88-mm. guns and automatic weapons, Sergeant Cacossa, armed only with an automatic weapon and hand grenades, voluntarily and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, left his position of comparative safety and engaged single-handedly, an enemy counterattacking force of approximately company strength. The threat was temporarily stalled by this valiant and heroic act long enough to bring friendly artillery support for his company and the counterattack was completely repulsed. Sergeant Cacossa was killed during this action but his courage, fortitude, and untiring devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
