The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) Frederic Bates Butler (ASN: 0-122047), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Italy. From ** to ** October 1943, Colonel Butler led his command to each succeeding objective, in its advance from ***** to *****, Italy, displaying aggressive and inspirational leadership of the highest order. On ** October, when the ** Battalion of his Regiment was ordered to make a crucial attack near *****, he came forward and accompanied these troops on their mission, encouraging them to great efforts. Again on ** October, when one of his battalions was halted by enemy fire near *****, he personally rallied the officers and men, within full view of the enemy and under continuous small arms fire, and organized a successful resumption of the attack. Colonel Butler has continually exposed himself to enemy fire, without regard to his personal welfare, in order to inspire the members of his command. His presence in the front lines and his close contact with the advance elements of his command exemplify his fearlessness, aggressiveness, and complete devotion to duty. Colonel Butler’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
