Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 143 (August 24, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant [then Private First Class] Charles Henry Bussey, Jr. (ASN: 18074984), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Cassino, Italy, during the FIFTH Army push in Italy on 1 February 1944. Sergeant Bussey was acting as squad leader in an attack on Hill 382, when his first scout was wounded, and took over and led the attack up the hill. Near the top, advancing under heavy fire, he came upon an enemy radio man who was directing German artillery against the advancing units. He took this man prisoner, thereby depriving the enemy of vital observation. Upon reaching the top of the hill, Sergeant Bussey observed a machine gun position which was holding up the advance of his squad. Maneuvering into position, he threw a hand grenade into the nest, killing one man and seriously wounding another. He then brought up his squad to a small ledge and led his men into an attack in the face of heavy enemy small arms fire. The assault was successful in driving the enemy from the crest of the hill. The actions of Sergeant Bussey enabled his squad and platoon to take the hill which was the company objective. Technical Sergeant Bussey’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
