The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Carleton Raymond Bushor (ASN: 20150753), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 169th Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 16 July 1943. Sergeant Busher was leading his Infantry platoon in an attack on an enemy stronghold which had repulsed two previous assaults, when a concentration of fire stopped the advance of the Infantry and supporting tanks. In full view of enemy machine gunners and snipers, and in the face of heavy mortar fire, he jumped on one of the tanks and pounded on its turret until he attracted the attention of the crew who had not discovered the well-concealed pillboxes. With complete disregard for his safety, he stayed on the tank and pointed out the Japanese emplacements. Sergeant Bushor’s act enabled the tanks to destroy the pillboxes and pave the way for the capture of the strategically important position by ground troops. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
