(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Samie Burns (ASN: 20543886), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Battery C, 106th Coast Artillery Battalion (Anti-Aircraft), in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, in December 1942. Private First Class Burns was the driver of the only truck in a convoy which was equipped with a .50 caliber machine gun. When the convoy was attacked by seven JU-88 airplanes, he maneuvered his truck into firing position and manned the weapon. During the action, he shot down two enemy planes and damaged at least one other, saving many lives and much equipment. Private First Class Burns’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
