The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Wallace LeRoy Bunker (ASN: 20702944), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 20 February 1943, near Sbiba, Tunisia, North Africa. Private Bunker, who was on a water detail, was trapped by enemy artillery fire, followed by automatic weapons fire and tanks. Hearing cries of the wounded for help, he secured first aid equipment and regardless of his own safety, went to their assistance. He had started to carry one man to cover when he received fatal wounds. The undaunted bravery of Private Bunker, who gave his life to save his comrades, inspired all the men of his company, and reflects the highest traditions of the military service.
