The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Elmer Paul Buehrig (ASN: 17007442), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 January 1942, in the vicinity of Abucay Hacienda, Philippine Islands. On that date, the 2d and 3d Battalions renewed their advance but the units became separated in dense jungle growth. Advancing abreast, the companies had to cross a steep decline to reach its objective. Although they were supported by a few rounds of artillery, there was no other protective fire as they entered the gap. Climbing hand over hand and crossing a knee-deep creek, they ascended the slope. On the ridge, the 2d Battalion was hit by what turned out to be the main body of an enemy regiment moving in the opposite direction. In the ensuing engagement, Private Elmer C. Duffy was hit by a burst of machine gun fire while on point for Company F. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Buehrig dashed forward to aid his comrade and was hit by a burst of fire from the same gun, and killed. Private Buehrig’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
