Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 263 (July 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Private John Powazi (ASN: US-51061895), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, Private Powazi’s squad, while occupying an outpost in front of the main company defenses, was viciously attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. When one of his comrades was seriously wounded, Private Powazi, braving the enemy fire, moved to the stricken rifleman’s side and quickly administered first aid. As the squad was given the order to withdraw, he, heedless of the danger to himself, picked up and carried the wounded soldier through a series of trenches, which at that time had been infiltrated by hostile troops, to the main defense line where the man received medical treatment. Private Powazi’s heroism and selflessness reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
