The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Newman (ASN: RA-12343253), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. While engaged with a numerically superior enemy force, the squad of which Private Newman was a member suffered casualties, among them his squad leader. Unhesitatingly, he took command of the remainder of the squad, reorganizing and encouraging his comrades. This action was so successful that his squad was able to hold off the enemy with rifle fire until his wounded comrades could be evacuated. Private Newman’s gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
