The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Joseph Boreyko, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Asin, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 25 April 1945. On that date, the Anti-Tank Company to which Sergeant Boreyko was attached was spearheading a push along the Asin-Baguio road in mountainous northern Luzon. Enemy fire from caves commanding the road held up the advance. While two platoons were deployed to flank the cave, he took three men and descended the steep mountainside to hit the other side. Moving rapidly down the treacherous cliff, Sergeant Boreyko was far in front of his men when he discovered four snipers on a ledge six feet below, using rifles and grenades against the flanking American soldiers. Without hesitation, Sergeant Boreyko leaped into the midst of the startled snipers, firing his rifle, killing all four of them. Then, still ahead of his men, he moved on toward the cave mouth, from which two more Japanese were sniping and killed both. He covered the mouth of the cave with his rifle while to comrades crept cautiously forward to clean it out. Grenades drove them back, but Sergeant Boreyko refused to move until his men had found cover. An enemy soldier rushed to the entrance to hurl more grenades but fell to Sergeant Boreyko’s fire. He then called for grenades and hurled them into tunnels branching from either side of the cave mouth, thereby ending all enemy resistance. Staff Sergeant Boreyko’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 33d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
