The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) James Cecil Bobo (ASN: 0-1031888), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 116th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 101st Cavalry Group (Separate), in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 8, 12, and 16 April 1945. On 8 April 1945, First Lieutenant Bobo’s platoon was fired on by an enemy machine gun as they entered a town. Lieutenant Bobo dismounted from his armored car, crawled to the enemy’s rear and destroyed the hostile emplacement. Four days later, he killed two enemy snipers with hand grenades and his carbine, and captured four Germans. Two days later, while reconnoitering for a new route of approach, Lieutenant Bobo annihilated a hostile machine gun and Panzerfaust nest by crawling to within twenty-five yards of the position and hurling grenades. While advancing shortly afterwards, he was killed by a sniper. First Lieutenant Bobo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
