The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Fred W. N. Boardman (ASN: 12138486), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on Hill 380, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 7 December 1944. When the Japanese opened fire on his company, Private Boardman volunteered to flank and eliminate the enemy positions. He crawled forward about one hundred yards under concentrated machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire until he reached grenade range of the enemy guns. He then jumped into the enemy position and overpowered the gunners, threw the machine gun out of the emplacement, and opened fire with his rifle on the remaining enemy. He used his rifle and bayonet to eliminate the gun crew and its protecting infantrymen, allowing his battalion to conquer Hill 380. Private Boardman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
