(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack Hirsch Blumberg (ASN: 0-438576), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forced in Italy, on 10 October 1943. Lieutenant Blumberg led a six-man patrol through gunfire in Italy to destroy machine gun nests with hand grenades. On his return, he was killed by a sniper whose dugout he and his comrades were attacking. Second Lieutenant Blumberg’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
