The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James D. McNabb (ASN: RA-14352171), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, Company H was fiercely attacked by the enemy. In the midst of the intense fight that followed, Private McNabb realized that overwhelming numbers of the enemy were about to overrun his position and those of the other riflemen around him. Disregarding his own safety, he fought his way in vicious hand-to-hand combat to a nearby recoilless rifle emplacement and asked the crew to switch their fire to his foxhole area. Fighting his way back to his position, he continued to fire and throw hand grenades at the attacking forces. When the area was nearly surrounded by the enemy, Private McNabb again battled his way to an ammunition point and obtaining a supply of ammunition and grenades returned to his place, continuing with his fellow infantrymen to repel the enemy. Private McNabb’s extreme courage and gallant achievements on the field of battle reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
