The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Delbert Leonard Bjork, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 25 May 1943, at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska. Captain Bjork voluntarily lay in an exposed position in the face of withering fire by entrenched Japanese and directed fire that enabled other troops under his command to destroy the hostile position. Later he penetrated enemy-held territory to find one of his officers who had become a casualty. Captain Bjork’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
