Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 39 (April 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] Clarence Bishop (ASN: 6271960), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 337th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Poggero, Italy, on 10 October 1944. When his platoon leader became a casualty, Lieutenant Bishop took charge of the platoon and led the advance on enemy positions on high ground. His platoon was caught in enemy artillery, mortar, machine gun and rifle fire 200 yards from its objective. Directing the platoon guide to take charge of the platoon, Lieutenant Bishop moved forward alone. Under fire from three enemy machine guns to the rear and long range machine gun fire to the left, he advanced to a draw which he followed a short distance, then dashing across 20 yards of open ground, he reached a shallow ditch. Nearing an enemy emplacement, he rose to a crouch and fired, killing one member of the machine gun crew and forcing the remaining Germans to seek cover. Lieutenant Bishop quickly assaulted the emplacement, killing two more members of the crew, and captured the remaining two occupants. With his two captors before him as a shield, he advanced to the next emplacement, firing his weapon as he advanced. He succeeded in capturing the crew members and their weapon intact. Lieutenant Bishop boldly repeated this strategy to take the third enemy machine gun and its crew. By his courageous action he killed three and captured nine of the enemy with their weapons and secured the platoon’s objective. Second Lieutenant Bishop’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
