Billman (ASN: 0-1702976), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 31 October 1943, in the vicinity of Ciorlano, Italy. During an attack in mountainous terrain, Second Lieutenant Billman’s company was stopped by intense machine gun fire on the crest of a hill. One squad was ordered to attempt to flank the enemy position. The squad worked its way to a point within fifty yards of the enemy, when its presence was discovered. The Germans immediately opened fire with rifles and machine pistol, wounding the squad leader and trapping the squad under a ledge. The squad sent word to its platoon and asked for a first aid man.
