The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Leonard B. Bessman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the II Field Security Detachment, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, in April 1943. Lieutenant Bessman attempted to enter, in advance of armored reconnaissance element, the area vacated by the enemy. He found a strong natural position held by enemy machine guns and other weapons, including a tank, and sent his driver to the rear with this information. He maintained a fire fight against overwhelming odds for at least two hours, enabling his messenger to warn friendly troops of this force, which was in position to do great damage to any force approaching the road. Lieutenant Bessman was reported as missing in action following this engagement. First Lieutenant Bessman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
