The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Pat (Pasquale) Berardi (ASN: 35622047), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 27 April 1945. Sergeant Berardi, his platoon leader, and one other soldier volunteered to go to the aid of a beleaguered squad which was isolated from the main body of troops and under enemy attack. As this small party approached the squad’s position, it was fired upon by enemy snipers concealed in high grass. Sergeant Berardi’s companions wee killed. Boldly charging into the thicket, Sergeant Berardi attacked the enemy snipers with hand grenades and rifle fire. Although he was severely wounded in the encounter, he courageously pressed his single-handed assault and killed or drove the snipers from the area. He then joined the beleaguered squad where he immediately assumed command and personally directed the evacuation of the wounded before allowing himself to be carried to the rear. Sergeant Berardi died as a result of the wounds he received in this action. His heroic efforts above and beyond the normal call of duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
