Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 221 (August 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Sherle Everett Bellard (ASN: 37781250), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action in Germany. On 27 March 1945, during an attack on Obernau, Germany, Private Bellard and another scout fearlessly charged an enemy position from which they were being subjected to intense small arms fire, killed one enemy soldier and captured the other. He then forced the prisoner to lead the way to a heavily fortified enemy pill box containing the remainder of the town’s defenders. Advancing alone through withering hostile fire, he hurled two grenades into the enemy position and wounded or captured the entire group of nineteen German soldiers. Private Bellard’s courageous, aggressive actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
