(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Lee Houston Beddow, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Mount Bataglia, Italy, on 2 October 1944. On that date Sergeant Beddow was defending the right flank where the perimeter of defensive positions had barely been established. Firing his Tommy Gun, he moved swiftly from strongpoint to strongpoint, marshalling his men against the enemy as they slipped from bush to rock as they struck up the sharply angled slope. Enemy counterattacks smashed the assault, forcing them to pull back. A mortar burst wounded him in the face, the leg, and arm. Blinded, he groped for a comrade and with his support moved down the hill for treatment and evacuation. Later, twenty enemy bodies were found around his defensive position. Sergeant Beddow’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 88th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
