The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Daniel Dee Barron (ASN: 36551776), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with an Infantry Company of the 136th Infantry Regiment, 33d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sison, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 19 February 1945. During his platoon’s advance against strongly entrenched enemy positions on a steep slope, Private First Class Barron, an automatic rifleman, was painfully wounded by a grenade and ordered to the rear for first aid. As he started back a concealed enemy machine gun opened fire on the flank of his platoon. Realizing the threat to the lives of his comrades, he rose to a kneeling position and opened fire on the emplacement. Pulled to the ground by a comrade, he shortly raised himself again to a position from which he could fire effectively, deliberately exposing himself in order to draw the enemy fire from his platoon. During this exchange of fire he was hit many times and seriously wounded, but continued firing until the enemy was silenced and the threat of counterattack averted. He died of his wounds immediately afterward. Inspired by his intrepid example, his comrades resumed their attack, over-ran the enemy and destroyed their positions. Private First Class Barron, through his magnificent heroism and supreme sacrifice for the sake of his brother-at-arms, saved the lives of many men of his platoon and assured the success of their attack.
