The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Odell Baker, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 7 June 1944. Private Baker volunteered to enter an orchard full of snipers and concealed enemy light machine guns which were impeding the advance of his company and inflicting numerous casualties. Fearlessly and under the direct fire of these weapons and in plain view of the enemy, he twice entered the orchard and moved from position to position, crossing many yards of fire-swept terrain. Disregarding the intense enemy fire directed at him, and although seriously wounded, he continued in his mission until he had reduced several of the enemy positions and had rescued three American paratroopers who had been captured by the enemy. The valor and courageous tenacity of purpose displayed by Private Baker exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
