The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Mason Hamel Armstrong (ASN: 34973014), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Chevron, Belgium, on 18 December 1944. Private First Class Armstrong voluntarily moved forward and located enemy armor which had halted his company’s advance. He advanced thorough enemy fire to a position from which, with well-aimed bazooka fire, he knocked out a hostile half-track. Although subjected to cannon fire, he disabled a second half-track and forced the crew of a third to abandon their vehicle. Private First Class Armstrong’s fearless actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
