The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Rollo Clayton Andross (ASN: 0-23624), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 169th Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 13 July 1943. Captain Andross and his company were ordered to take a hill under the command of the Japanese. Captain Andross and his orderly were well ahead of his company leading the attack, Suddenly they were confronted by three enemy soldier. Captain Andross killed two of the enemy while his order killed the third Japanese soldier. Just as they accomplished this, machine gun fire burst from the top of the hill, and Captain Andross, suffering many gunshot wounds and died immediately. Captain Andross’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 43d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
