The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) William A. Anderson (ASN: 0-2020996), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 May 1951 near Chaun-ni, Korea. Lieutenant Anderson’s company was moving in column when it was ambushed by enemy forces. The unit was disorganized and in confusion. Quickly establishing command, in spite of intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Anderson reorganized and rallied his men. He then aggressively established a firing line and fought the enemy. After this base of fire was set up they evacuated three wounded men. He directed this fire until all the wounded were safe. The leadership and outstanding courage under fire on the part of Lieutenant Anderson reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
