Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces-Central Pacific Area, General Orders No. 129 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Fred Anaya (ASN: 39155582), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 184th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action at Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, 3 on February 1944. Private Anaya, an automatic rifleman, was advancing with his squad against strongly defended enemy bunkers and at the same time was assisting the advance of an adjacent squad to the right. As that squadron advanced on an enemy bunker in which satchel charges and grenades had been thrown, a large number of the enemy issued forth hurling grenades and laying down small arms fire. Private Anaya, unmindful of his own danger and exposed position and though wounded by grenade fragments, held his ground and effectively returned the fire, enabling the squad to take cover without a casualty. He continued to return fire, killing a large number of the enemy, before he himself was killed. His self-sacrifice and devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
