Raymond Alsip was involved in an Air Mission in early February during which his aircraft was attacks and, after the Pilot had been wounded and the other gunners killed or wounded, he kept the enemy Zeros off the head of the plane with his fire, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, He was seriously wounded in that action, and died a few days later.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Raymond Herman Alsip (ASN: 35169026), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy during air operations against the enemy on 24 October 1942, as a crew member of a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the FIFTH Air Force while participating in an attack on a Japanese Flying Boat, sighted and immediately engaged over Malalia in the Solomon group. Corporal Alsip and other members of the crew, folllowing a short period of intensive action, succeeded in shooting the enemy craft down to the surface of the sea, where it crashed and burst into flames. Corporal Alsip’s unquestionable valor in aerial combat at the cost of his life is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
