The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Ernest H. Allison (ASN: 6934451), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 26 July 1943. With complete subordination of self to a determined execution of an assigned task, he led his platoon in fierce fighting for a half hour after he was wounded. While dodging among trees and in and out of shell holes to designate targets and post his men for maximum fire effect, he was struck by a shell fragment which later caused his death. He refused evacuation and lay wounded directing the action of the men through his second in command. When the platoon was ordered to retire to a new position, he still would not permit himself to be removed until his men were in the process of making an orderly withdrawal and the success of the move was assured. Sergeant Allison’s insistence that the lines be held secure, his unflagging courage and his almost superhuman power of endurance moved his men to fight desperately and with inspired determination against overwhelmingly superior odds.
