The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Walter Neal Alexander (ASN: 19032483), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a member of the 440th Ordnance Company (Aviation), 19th Bomb Group (Heavy), attached to the 61st Field Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts), 61st Division, Philippine Army, in action against the enemy at Mindanao, Philippine Islands from 3 to 10 May 1942. During the Japanese invasion of Mindanao, Private Alexander demolished an important timber yard and compound and two important bridges along the Sayre national highway between Buge and Maluko, while under enemy observation and artillery fire, thereby delaying the enemy advance. Working continuously for four days, he salvaged a load of aerial bombs from a captured tugboat. Private Alexander’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
