The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal John Joseph Achille (ASN: 32815746), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against a hostile force while serving with the 674th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy at Nichols Field, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. While accompanying an artillery forward observer’s party, Corporal Achille and the officer in charge were wounded by enemy mortar fire. The officer was evacuated and Corporal Achille, despite his wound, assumed command of the party, directed artillery fire upon the enemy and successfully destroyed the enemy position. A few minutes later a second enemy strong point opened fire against the attacking American forces. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Achille strapped a radio to his back and moved forward in front of the infantry. Undeterred by heavy machine gun fire, he swam a river and reached an observation post from which he directed artillery fire to destroy an enemy pillbox. Through his initiative, leadership, and outstanding devotion to duty, Corporal Achille materially aided in the advice of our forces and set an inspiring example to the men of his unit. His unquestionable valor in close combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 11th Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
