The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Herbert Jacob Woehl (ASN: 39230452), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 160th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Negros Island, Philippine Islands, on 9 May 1945. Advancing up a narrow ridge toward a strong enemy position on Dolan Hill, the infantry platoon of which Staff Sergeant Woehl was a member was swept by machine gun and mortar fire from a dozen pillboxes. While his comrades halted under the furious fire, Staff Sergeant Woehl crawled forward along. He destroyed one pillbox with a grenade, as he worked his way ahead to another he was hit and killed by the enemy bullets. Staff Sergeant Woehl’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 40th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
