(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Cavalry) John Zadoc Wheeler (ASN: 0-346792), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Troop E, 2d Squadron, 26th Cavalry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Damortis, La Union, Philippine Islands, on 22 December 1941. Captain Wheeler led his troops in a delaying action against the Japanese, which helped cover the withdrawal of American forced to Bataan. Captain Wheeler’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
