The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Frederick W. Unger (ASN: 6902858), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Unger was serving as a mortar section leader with an infantry organization engaged in an attack upon the enemy. As the attack progressed, Staff Sergeant Unger got into a tank from which he acted as observer for his mortars. The tank from which he was operating received a direct hit from an enemy shell which set it afire. Despite heavy enemy small arms fire from which he had been protected within the tank, Staff Sergeant Unger moved to an exposed position beside the tank and continued to direct effective mortar fires reducing enemy positions, which in turn enabled the attack to progress successfully. The courage under fire and devotion to duty shown by Staff Sergeant Unger reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
