Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 520 (November 16, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) George Earl Preddy (ASN: 0-430846), United States Army Air Forces, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Mustang Fighter Airplane in the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352d Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in action against the enemy, 18 July 1944. Leading a squadron of P-51 fighters to rendezvous with a formation of bombers, Major Preddy observed approximately fifty (50) JU 88s with a top cover of Me-109’s. Realizing that the enemy were en route to intercept the bombers, he immediately detailed two pilots to accompany him in an attack on the JU 88’s while the remainder of the squadron engaged the fighters. With complete disregard for the enemy’s numerical superiority, he led his flight in a daring attack. With only one wing-man for support and his plane damaged by enemy gunfire, he tenaciously pressed the attack to destroy three (3), probably destroy two (2) and damage two (2) aircraft. Major Preddy’s courage, determination to destroy the enemy and utter disregard for personal safety are largely responsible for frustrating the attack on the bomber formation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Preddy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
